I have been working on baby blankets and recently found a time saver. I used to pin pleats on the satin ribbon and then sew on the minky fabric. After a few blankets and a lot of time, I purchased a ruffler foot. You can actually ruffle satin onto the fabric at the same time. I wish I had gotten a ruffler foot a little sooner. Now I am looking for projects that need ruffles! Pillow cases, dresses, etc.

I handsome extra minky fabric and wanted to think of a something else it could be used for other than baby blankets. I decided to make my daughter a pillowcase. She got to pick out the color and the embroidery design. She thought that was great! She loved how soft it was on her face. Well, when she woke the next morning her long hair wasn’t tangled like normal. Which meant less brushing and fusing that morning!. It’s the pillowcase. Grandma was right! If you don’t want your hair messed up during the night than sleep on satin…..and now minky too!

At Kent State University they do an annual fashion/art show in November called Beaux Arts Ball. This year’s theme is Circus and I made a dress in the category “Graceful Entertainment.” This is not just a fashion show, the architecture students collaborated together to create the runway and set design for the show. After the show is a dance. This is a picture of my dress at the dress rehearsal for the show, I will post more pictures after the show tomorrow.

Being a busy, working mom of two small kids, I love to use clothes that my kids already have and some other materials from around the house to make their Halloween costumes. That’s what my parents did when I was young, and that’s what I do. I made this costume with that in mind.

This is a really neat website that I ran across when I was given two really neat gifts. Both were rings with all different colors of 100% rayon seam binding, and the other Petersham ribbon. These are incredibly convenient when I need to match a color to hem up a skirt, or trim the lapel of a jacket. You can order them with a minimum order of 1 yard. These are only a couple of the really neat things they have for sale on this website, I encourage you to check it out.

Be careful of the tracing or dressmakers’ paper you use. Dressmakers’ paper has a coated side and leaves a mark on your fabric when you wheel over the lines. These lines are hard to remove, so choose the color of the paper wisely. Yellow tends to be the strongest color and may bleed through your fabric. Always use white on white (anything else will bleed).

Once you’ve selected the right paper cut your fabric with right sides together. Then layer your stack so the paper is on the bottom with the colored side up, your fabric is on top of the paper, and the pattern is on the top of the stack.
Trace around your pattern making all necessary marks. Then use the marks on your bottom layer of fabric to mark your second layer. Cut your peices and you’re ready to go!

If you thought organic was just a grocery craze, then think again. Lately all the shows are featuring organic fabrics, fibers and fillers.
NearSea Naturals sells notions and fabrics using certifed organic cotton — and they’re all mostly made in the US! They have a selection of textured solids and fun prints, buttons made from shells, bamboo, coconut and naturally-dropped antlers, and notions such as elastic and thread. All sew green!
What have you sewn green?
